Y finalmente los rumores se han cumplido en forma de un nuevo cliente de mensajería con capacidades «telefónicas».
Google acaba de liberar un nuevo programa de mensajería instantánea que sumar a la amplia gama actualmente existente.
«Google Talk», que es como finalmente ha sido bautizado es un cliente de mensajería instantanea con funcionalidades telefónicas.
Elegante y funcional, incorpora un avanzado sistema de telefonía, aunque bien es cierto que la primera versión del programa es bastante espartano.
En su interfaz dispone de acceso a nuestra cuenta de correo Gmail y se supone que nuestros contactos de correo aparecen directamente en Google Talk.
Actualmente tan solo existe versión para Windows, aunque desde Google próximamente nos prometen versiones para Macintosh y Linux.
No obstante Google Talk está basado en Jabber, por lo cual también soporta otros clientes de comunicación estándar, lo cual significa que los usuarios de Gmail podrán acceder a los servicios e intercambiar mensajes usando otros clientes que soporten el protocolo XMPP, tales como Trillian, GAIM, iChat, Adium, y Psi.
Lamentablemente, y a pesar de lo inicialmente rumoreado, el cliente es incompatible con otras redes y en el mismo tan solo aparecerán nuestros contactos «Google Talk».
No obstante Google está actualmente en negociaciones con Skype, AOL y Yahoo! para crear interoperatibilidad entre sus protocolos, por lo que es bastante probable que en un futuro tendremos acceso a dichas redes.
Para su empleo es necesario disponer de cuenta de correo Gmail, y actualmente tan solo está disponible en inglés.
El sistema no muestra publicidad ni ningún tipo de pop-ups y según parece la intención inicial de Google es mantener la interfaz limpia.
Actualmente Google Talk no encripta las conversaciones ni chats, aunque nos prometen una futura versión con avanzadas funcionalidades de privacidad.
